Neighborliness on Good Morning America

“I don’t want to make you nervous,” Courtney (producer at GMA3) said to me, “but four million people will be watching this interview.” We both laughed. “Honestly,” I replied, “I’m not super nervous, I’m just ready to share this message that burns so deep in my heart to see our culture unified across dividing lines.” I might be nervous tomorrow. Today, I’m grateful and ready.

It’s still so surreal that this is happening. We adapted the content of the interview on this call because of the mass shooting & tragic loss of life in Buffalo. Courtney asked me if it would be ok if they start the interview asking how we can heal as a nation in light of so much division and violence. I told her that my answer would include pointing directly to Jesus. She said that’s just fine.

I’m grateful for so many who have been praying alongside us. God has opened this door and I’m excited to walk through it. Thanks for praying alongside us. All glory to God for what he’s done and will do with this opportunity.

Neighborliness Hits #1 as New Release

Quick update from an amazing week … Neighborliness hit number one in three different categories on Amazon this week for new releases and climbed all the way into the top six of all books in two different categories … praise God!

Neighborliness at Target, Walmart, & Good Morning America

It’s easy to give God the glory when you know you’re in the middle of a miracle.

“I have great news for you. We have just booked you on Good Morning America in April.” I rubbed my eyes to see if I was reading the email from my public relations manager at Harper Collins right.

“Dara, look at this.” I said handing her my phone, “Chasity just booked me on Good Morning America.” I think I was expecting my wife to read something different back to me. “Good Morning America, there’s no way,” I said to myself.

ABC’s morning show averages 3.3 million viewers each day and they want to spend five minutes on live television talking to me about Neighborliness. I’m still having a hard time wrapping my head around the way God continues to open doors far beyond my wildest imagination.

My head was already spinning from the week before. We had just found out Target decided to pick up Neighborliness. A few weeks prior to that, several major retailers agreed to carry the book, as well: Barnes and Noble, Walmart, Amazon, Books-A-Million, and many more.

My desire was to create practical resources for people to explore the greatest commandment: loving God and neighbors. I had no clue that message would resonate so deeply with people all across the world.

Lent – A Season of Fasting, Prayer, and Preparation

Would you give up a few things that you enjoy to cultivate your relationship with the person you love the most?

That’s the idea behind a season of fasting and prayer called Lent.

Lent is the 40-day period of fasting and prayer leading up to Easter that helps us focus our attention on God. Fasting, quite simply, is removing something from your normal routine and replacing that time with prayer and reflection toward God.

I highly recommend some sort of a fast multiple times per year. The spiritual and physical benefits are well-documented. People mistakenly assume that fasting is simply going without food.

Not true.

You can fast anything that will draw your attention to God consistently. One of the most effective fasts that I have seen in recent memory was a friend of mine fasted social media for Lent. He made the comment, “I never realized how compulsively I checked social media updates until I took that away from my normal routine.” The inclination to check his messages was replaced by a reminder to pray, meditate, or fix his attention on God.

Dara and I are doing a Daniel fast (click here to see recipes). We will incorporate 40 days of clean eating, prayer, and exercising our spiritual disciplines. There are books by Henri Nouwen, Walter Brueggemann, CS Lewis, and more that can be found by searching for “Lent devotionals” online.

Lent begins on Wednesday, February 17 and ends on April 1. We prepare our hearts to remember the death and resurrection of Jesus on Easter weekend. If you have never participated in an intentional season of fasting and prayer, join us as we move into this season of Lent.

Additionally, remember that this is not a spiritual requirement. You don’t get bad grades on anything if you slip up or have a moment of weakness. This is your choice and it can be started or stopped at any time. Our life of faith is not about rules. Our life of faith is about relationship with Jesus. We choose to fast and pray. We are not required to fast and pray. Changing your perspective on the practice of fasting and prayer changes your motivation and experience in the process.
