Six Days

We are six days away from realizing a dream that Dara and I have had for the last seven years. This is the same dream that is shared by so many that have given up so much to be here with us. Center City Church opens to the community this Sunday, April 4, 2010.

It comes with the territory that this will never be accomplished without a fight. Dara and I are praying hard and strong for our family, our friends and our church. We live in the tension between the fact that there are forces of good and evil. God has called us to start this church. Satan does not want that to happen. And the battle continues.

It’s been a long road, filled with victories and indescribable challenges. And we’re digging in again this week. I am comforted by the fact that the same power that conquered the grave (the power of Jesus Christ) lives in me. And in all who have asked Christ into their hearts as Savior.

We are six days away from realizing this dream. And we’re standing our ground. We are so ready to see what is to come. So excited. So confident (in Christ’s work through us).

Let’s do this.

Amazing Friends

Dara and I spent the day painting the day away at Clark and Salina Beasley’s new house in Uptown Charlotte. These are two of our closest friends (along with their one year old, Salem, and Baby Mia that is due this summer). They are moving to Charlotte this week to join us at Center City Church.

Clark and Salina are amazing musicians and worship leaders. But more than that, they are amazing friends. We share the ups and downs of life together. We celebrate together. We cry together. We are so excited to welcome them as the newest residents of the Elizabeth community in Uptown!

I’m so blown away by the way that God has brought so many amazing people to Charlotte. So many have left so much to jump on board with all that God is doing at Center City Church. We love this community. We love this church. And we love doing life together.

So grateful that we get to do what we’re doing. I’m even more grateful that we get to do this with amazing friends.

Jury Duty

We are 9 days away from opening Center City Church. So exciting. There’s a ton going on right now, and I spent my day doing exactly the opposite of what I would have expected a week and a half before we open our church: in the court room.

My jury summons instructed me to arrive at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse in Uptown Charlotte at 8am. I was selected on the very first case of the day and spent the entire day hearing testimonies. Crazy enough, this case has carried over into tomorrow, meaning I get another full day ahead of me in the court room.

I’m so grateful for Pastor Will Morgan and Pastor John Gum. These guys have been working so hard. We are together in this. Even when jury duty calls!

Help Portrait: A Moment That Became a Movement

Jeremy Cowart had an idea. Find someone in need. Take their portrait. Print their portrait. And deliver them. He called it, very simply, Help Portrait.

This one idea sparked a social phenomenon that spanned the globe. Creatives of all types – photographers, graphic designers, lighting technicians, makeup artists, etc – came together in December 2009 to pull off one of the most unified movements the creative community has ever seen:

4,000+ photographers.
10,000+ volunteers.
600+ locations.
42 countries.
Over 42,000 pictures given.

Photographers were not just taking pictures. They were giving them. And along the way, they gave hope. They made people smile. And they gave a tangible gift of hope in the form of portraits delivered.

This moment that Jeremy (who I’ve never met) had got me thinking. What’s next? Where does the next global movement of love and compassion come from? Maybe it’s in you. Or me.

Always remember, one moment can start a movement. Big or small. Don’t be afraid to stick your neck out and go for it! You might just start something much bigger than you imagined.

There are tens of thousands of people that benefited from one moment of creative thinking by Jeremy Cowart. What is next?

Open the Doors

We have just moved into our new venue, Elizabeth Traditional Elementary School, and along with that comes the need for – you got it – more fund raising. Here’s a look at the most current piece we came up with to give people an opportunity to contribute to the cost of one hour, one week or one month in our new venue. It’s a 4×6 postcard (designed by Pastor Will Morgan).
