Why Is A Church Hosting a History Series on West Charlotte?

Why is a church hosting a history series on West Charlotte?

I think that’s a fair question. My quick answer is that I think more churches should be hosting history lessons on their communities. When you know your story, you can tell your story with better clarity and understanding. Also, I am motivated to host this series because the full story of our community is not widely known.

We are hosting three events in April (Thursdays – 5, 19, and 26) on the history of West Charlotte. It’s called “Tell True Stories” and the motivation is to learn about this beautiful community that has been overlooked and disparaged for far too long. West Charlotte is full of unique and powerful stories. The dirt our church is resting on used to be a World War I training site called Camp Greene.

We are going to explore the way that it went from a military base to a residential neighborhood that has been segregated along racial and socioeconomic lines for multiple generations.

Here’s what’s crazy, though… this same community (and our surrounding neighborhoods) are now some of the hottest real estate in Charlotte. A popular buzz word – GENTRIFICATION – is upon us with all of it’s complexity and consequences. Our neighbors are being displaced, many that have lived here for decades. Real estate prices are skyrocketing, and neighbors are losing their homes.

The more we know, the more we can find new ways to care and love our neighbors. That’s important to me, and it should be important to everyone that follows Jesus.

I think we need more settings like this. We have experts sharing from various perspectives on the history of our city, the consequences of developers moving into the community, and the reality that our neighbors feel as their neighborhoods change. I believe that we need to have more settings like this, honestly. Breaking down barriers, learning from one another, and letting the experts be experts in their areas. Not everyone that is presenting will come from a faith perspective, and some will talk about how their faith informs their efforts. This is an educational journey that will help all of us learn and grow in ways that are important to understanding our city on a broader scale.

I hope you can join us.
